Cyberwarfare involves the use and aiming of computers and
networks in warfare. It involves both offensive and defensive operations
pertaining to the threat of cyber-attacks, corporate espionage and sabotage.
There has been controversy over whether such operations can suitably be called
"war".
Early this month the largest malware virus called the WannaCry ransomware virus hit
computers spreading to computer systems of hundreds of private companies and
public organisations across the globe.
The virus locks
computers and asks for a digital ransom before control is safely returned.
Ransomware attacks are not new, but the speed of the recent hackings has
alarmed security experts.
It’s also alleged that South Africa is among the countries
believed to be affected by the biggest global cyberattack. Cyber security
company Gold 'N Links Cyber says the malware used in the attack blocks
computers until money is paid to unlock it.
We interviewed Jappie
Nkuna by telephone, an I.T specialist studying at Belgium Campus about to
complete his Degree to get more insight about the situation, “people should
always change their passwords after 30 days to ensure safety security
measures”.
GnL Cyber's Roi Shoposhnik
explained that “A group of hackers identified a security patch that was issued
by Microsoft in March this year. They have managed to access more than 100,000
computers around the world.”
Its alleged, while it is
possible a large cyber-criminal gang are responsible, the attacks could also be
government-orchestrated. There was light at the end of the tunnel as when a
22-year-old slowed down the spread of a malware virus.Marcus Hutchins, a
British cyber security researcher, has been credited for stopping the WannaCry
ransomware attack's spread from a small bedroom in his parents' house.
Although there are still
Cyber security researchers who can alleviate such malware spreads, it is possible a large cyber-criminal gang are responsible and that the
gang attacks could also be government-orchestrated.
